Our Journey

On August 8th, 2023, we set out on a mission to visit a yarn store in all 50 states. A year later, we are 48 states into our journey and we’ve visited over 130 yarn stores, fiber mills, indie dyers, and farms.

This interactive map marks all the yarn stores that we’ve visited with a little yarn ball. Pink yarn balls are stores that have video tours. Just click them to pull up the video link!

  • Yarn store tours! We filmed a handful of yarn stores during our personal travels and the feedback from the community was overwhelmingly positive. The videos were a great way to connect makers with shops across the country.

    When we thought about ways to make that dream happen, while also keeping our rent low and our dog with us, a van seemed like the best option. So we waited for our lease to end in NYC, sold most of our furniture (again), and moved in with my (Natalie's) parents in Tennessee (temporarily).

    Now we are on the road in our van most of the year!

  • A combination of community suggestions and our own research.

    There have been some stores on my "to visit" list for years - like Lambspun of Colorado for their connection to a cozy knitting murder mystery series I've read.

    In other states, we ask the Knitty Natty community, usually on Instagram, what shops they recommend. We always reach out to the yarn stores in advance to set up the tour.

    I think it's important to share that we aren't paid by yarn stores to create the tours. This gives us the freedom to tour where we think is best and support yarn stores of all sizes.

  • Different, haha, but mostly awesome!

    We have a Coachmen Nova 20C Class B RV aka our van Lydia that we purchased fully converted as we are not handy at all. For size imagine an Amazon delivery truck or about the length of an F-250.

    Our living quarters are about 150 sq ft (14 sq m) if you include the cab.

    Kent, my husband, and I were already used to working right next to each other and living in a relatively small 750 sq ft apartment, so the transition was pretty easy.

  • Two places: with me and at my parents house.

    Before I even knew we'd be traveling full time, I worked for a year to downsize my stash and got it down to just one skein. You can watch that series here.

    So when I packed up my yarn shelf in New York to move to Tennessee, I had one extra large plastic tote that fit all of my tools and scrapy yarn.

    Fast forward to now and I'm collecting a lot of yarn while we travel! I have a super small shelf that hold my notions & needles bag, my Flippy book stand, and my current projects. So there's really only room for a couple of skeins of stash yarn.

    I mail yarn "home" to my parents' house when the shelf gets too full. I recently opened all of my packages to myself which you can watch here.

  • Honestly, not sure! We talk about it constantly, but we are always changing our minds.

    We should be finished visiting all 50 states in November of this year (2024). Our current plan is to rest and visit family in December and January.

    We likely will continue traveling in our van for a little bit longer in 2025, albeit at a slower pace and with more spontaneity. Stay tuned!
